This is a story I wrote based on an experience I had. I just thought I would share it for fun since I have been posting old works.
“Check the Kittens”
By Melissa Francisco
(Based on a true
story)
Melissa
climbed into bed and her dad pulled the covers up around her neck. “Good
night,” he said as he walked to the door of her room.
“Good night Daddy,” Melissa replied. But as
her dad left, Melissa did not feel tired at all. Something very exciting had
happened that day and she could not stop thinking about it. Melissa’s cat,
Hazel, had been getting a very big tummy the last few weeks and today she had
had six kittens! Melissa loved kittens and she had been carefully petting and
watching them most of the day. She was very excited to see them again tomorrow,
so she tried to close her eyes and go to sleep. Suddenly she heard a voice as
if someone were in her room talking to her. It said, “Go check the kittens.”
Melissa looked to her doorway expecting to see her dad there, but he was not.
Before she could really think about it the voice came again, “Melissa, go check
the kittens.” Melissa decided to obey the voice. She put on her slippers, walked
quietly down stairs, and out to the garage. The kittens were in a little wooden
box with their mother. Melissa’s dad had cut a hole in the top of the box and
put a heat lamp over it to keep the kittens warm. But when Melissa came up to
the box she gasped, the lamp had been bumped and was not covering the hole at
all. It was right on top of the wood and a little bit of smoke was starting to
come from it. Melissa quickly moved the heat lamp back over the hole and turned
it off. She then ran inside to tell her dad.
“Daddy,”
she said in a hurried tone, “the kitten’s house almost caught on fire!” Dad got
out of bed and followed Melissa out to the garage. When he saw the black spot
on the wood box he bent over and hugged Melissa tight.
“How
did you know to come and check on the kittens?” Dad asked.
“A voice told me while I was laying in bed,”
Melissa replied. Dad looked at Melissa very serious now.
“Do
you know who that voice was?” he asked. Melissa smiled.
“I think I do daddy, was it the Holy Ghost?
Dad nodded.
“Yes,
Melissa, it was.” He continued now even more serious than before, but Melissa
could see a smile in his eyes. “You probably saved the kittens by listening to
the voice of the Holy Ghost and you might have even saved us or our house from
being burned,” he told her. Melissa smiled and felt very warm and happy inside
in spite of the chill in the night air.
“The
Holy Ghost is a wonderful gift huh daddy,” she said.
“Yes, it is,” he
replied. “Thank you for listening to it, and checking the kittens.”
