"The Lightless" Chapter two

Chapter two
Shawn rounded another bend in the long corridor.  Someday, he though, I will live in the royal chambers and my subjects can spend their days walking the halls to come to me. He picked up his pace as he looked at his watch and rounded the final bend. The king's chambers were at the far end of the castle and were extensive and exotic. Shawn again reminded himself of his goal as he knocked gently on the gold embellished door.
"Enter." He heard the king say. And he moved the door forward feeling it resist gently against the fur run on the floor. "Ah Shawn, just in time, I was hoping that was you."
"Your majesty," Shawn said bending forward slightly.
"Yes yes yes," The king said waving his hand. "No need for that Shawn," then he paused, "though I always say that and you never listen."
Shawn shrugged. "Just fallowing protocol sire" he said dryly.  The king had turned to something on his desk though and didn't appear to hear.
"Now," he said suddenly, his voice stiff and tight, "despite my direct orders miss Park has fled to Earth's dimension and is now undergoing some silly search for an old family friend," here he rolled his eyes," women!" he said, the strain never leaving his voice. "This development leaves me only two choices." Here he looked expectantly at Shawn.
"Get her back and force her to perform the incantation or… "
"Precisely," The king said sharply. I don't really see any other options.
Shawn looked at the king expectantly and waited silently.
"Naturally the second option of finding someone else is daunting in its self but I am beginning to favor it."
"Someone else your majesty? I thought she was the only one who-"
"If you hadn't gathered miss Park is not an easy person to work with and I have several other families to try who may have the abilities miss Park possesses. Shawn bit his lip trying to make sense of his twirling mind. Other people like miss Park? What might his mean for him?
One of her kind was enough, he thought -too much actually- and now there might be more?
                "What families are you thin-"
"Of course I think it will be faster to bring miss Park back than to run tests on who knows how many people on just a hope." The king said, interrupting Shawn again. Shawn bit his lip, the kings tendency to talk over people was annoying to say the least. Shawn had wanted to put his hand over the kings mouth on more than one occasion but today he simply wanted to maim him. His plans for miss Park had been slowed, no, halted, and he didn’t at all feel like he had time to discuss it with the king, who rarely did anything but discuss his problems. Shawn smiled inwardly, I really shouldn’t complain about the king's lack of ability, it is going to win me the throne, he thought. Then an idea struck him, he almost blushed with embarrassment that it had not occurred to him before. He straightened and locked his eyes on the king's eyes, here goes, he thought.
"Your majesty, let me go and get her, he said more quickly than he had wanted to. Then he breathed deeply to remove the urgency from his voice. The guards I sent obviously didn't have the experience I assumed they had. Sometimes you have to take the initiative and do something yourself."
"You know Shawn, that's what I always say, you're learning boy and it’s a good thing to see. A few more years around me and you'll have what it takes to be a true leader. Go get her lad and bring her back to me within the month."
Shawn bowed and left the room, unable to speak for fear he would burst into laughter.
Well, miss Abby Park, he thought, you think I can't follow you huh? Guess you will have a nice surprise tonight.
