"The Lightless" Prologue
This is the start of my novel "The Lightless" Let me know what you think. =) (P.S I am going to post a it in chapters as I go, possibly every day but it might not be that often).
Prologue
Warm
heavy rain blurred the landscape. Abby pulled the collar of her raincoat up
around her neck and drew up her knees to her chest. From the shelter of the
large tree above her she could still see her destination. She checked her watch
for the tenth time and pursed her lips. "Better
go" she said with a deep sigh. Despite all her courage coming this far she
could feel her heart beating rapidly. She shook her head and chided herself
mentally. Now was not the time to back down so she started to rise. Before she
stood, however, she looked down at her hand. A small light blue ring twisted
itself around her finger in a simple yet intricate way. She sighed again,
shaking her head.
"I
can't believe I am doing this," she said aloud. Then she slipped the ring off
and let it fall to the ground beneath her. Even though it was gone her finger
still felt its presents like an unforgiving guilt grasping at her conscience. She
stood and pushed aside the thick underbrush of the forest. Through the grayish lens created by the thick
moisture she could see the dim light of the dimension glass glowing in the
distance. Suddenly a sharp swishing sound caused her to jump. Before she could
completely focus her eyes two men blocked her view.
"Going
somewhere?" one said calmly. Abby felt her heart sink like the fast
falling rain around her but she bit her lower lip and straightened her posture.
Both men stared at her with unrelenting eyes.
"That's
the most rhetorical questions I have ever been asked," Abby replied
dryly. Both men stiffened slightly.
"His
majesty requests that you return immediately miss Park," the spokesmen
said, "and you know why." Abby could hear the tension in her opponent's
voice but she forced herself to be calm. She took a step forward, tilted her
head, and blinked her blue eyes. Normally her short blond hair would have slid
gracefully across her shoulders but the rain held it fast in place.
"What
were his exact orders to you Jack? I mean word for word."
"Bring
her back-"
"Bring
her back," Abby repeated, her voice waving over the words. "He
clearly didn't specify when did he Jack?" As she spoke she walked toward
the two muscular men. Then, with her
last words, she dove unexpectedly to one side and ran past the human shield
before her. She could vaguely hear their shouts of anger as she dove into a
patch of glowing light behind them. She felt a swift jerking sensation then
complete stillness and total black engulfed her.
